The FBI and Police would like nothing better than to speak to Katherine Russell, the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The questions they would have for her are many.
In fact, according to sources, Federal agents yesterday made three visits to the Rhode Island home of the parents of Katherine Russell, 24, an all-American-girl-turned-terrorist’s-bride.
To some, this questioning would be a good thing, to uncover at least part of the truth or maybe discover other possible participants or potential future attackers.
But Consider this. Fact is, these men are NOT her friend and it is in no way in their interest to protect her. If she so much as breaths a hint that she knew of any part of the bombing or the building of explosive devices or guns, she could be carted off in cuffs and her child would be left without a mother.
So far, she has made all statements through her attorney. She would be very wise to continue to do so, or at the very least, have her attorney present and responding for her should any interrogation or questioning take place.
Police are often required, and it is perfectly legal, to lie to suspects to get them to give up information. It is not at all wrong for them to do so. But being aware of it in a situation in which a simple choice of words could land you in prison is critical, and they will not volunteer that information and are not required to read you Miranda rights unless they have already decided to arrest you.
It is the authorities’ job to do everything in their power to gather evidence and arrest suspects. It is also in the best interest of anyone being interrogated to have counsel present and say absolutely nothing that has not been reviewed and approved by counsel. She has the right to an attorney and anything she says CAN AND WILL be used against her even if she isn’t yet a suspect. The authorities will not tell her that.
