We all know them. People that abuse the system. People that work a few months of the year, just long enough to qualify for unemployment, and then jump on the unemployment bandwagon. Those that get food stamps to support their families despite being able bodied, often educated and capable of work. And, of course, the people that work “under the table” while receiving government aid intended for the truly needy.

One such image sticks in our minds from a visit last year to a local softball game. Across the street was a truck distributing food for the needy. A brand new Mercedes pulled up and out popped a couple that walked over and jumped in line. How someone driving a $60,000.00 car qualifies for free food is beyond our imagination, but somehow these people find any way they can to abuse the system.

barack_henriettahughesDuring Obama’s campaign to promote his stimulus package, he staged an event with a woman, Henrietta Hughes, who, as it turns out, appears to be anything but truly needy. Henrietta was given an audience with Obama to beg for a home. When aid was provided via the offer of free rent by an opportunistic politician, the liberal press spouted that Henrietta was actually given a free home and implied it came from Obama. The lie has propagated through the liberal media and, quite honestly, it nauseated us because it was so obviously staged and such a distorted lie. Well, as it turns out, the lie didn’t end there.

As is often the case with such lies, more information seems to shortly rise up from the darkness to expose the truth.  This situation is no different and new information about Henrietta has come to light. It appears that the desperate homeless woman owns real estate she shifted into the name of her son to avoid taxes and acquire government aid. Apparently, Henrietta is the teacher and Tom Daschle is just a student. Henrietta also apparently sold real estate at a significant profit in 2005. Henrietta has now become the poster child the Democrats wish to use to justify the massive expense of helping the chronically unemployed, not-so-needy and not-at-all-homeless.

In the spending package forced through by Democrats and signed into law by Obama, there are extensions of unemployment benefits. We believe that the government is better off extending unemployment only for those that are recently unemployed, not those unemployed annually for years, or decades.  We also believe that if the government cannot properly verify actual need, they should stop programs intended for the needy until they can. That would save funds which can be used for programs that actually help America as a whole, not just the unscrupulous. We also believe that if Obama himself cannot discern between this woman and a real homeless person, he shouldn’t be expecting government will actually give our tax dollars to the truly needy when the not-so-needy will grab it first.  So much for the myth of Robin Hood.

@adam – I think that what is meant by “years” is that there are people that abuse the system and collect unemployment for as long as possible then get a mediocre job and then collect unemployment again after a few months at that job.

I have not been on board with a lot of what Obama has done, but I find it a little ridiculous that he would stage this and that the story here is without bias. It is a typical Republican/Karl Roveian tactic to demonize someone like this woman…whatever job she MAY have had, clearly is not the one she has now, hence he homelessness…how she got there doesn’t make her some kind of rascal and scoundrel…reminds me of the days of Ronnie RAYgun’s laughable welfare queens schtick…

“this man that was an Illinois Senator for eight years”…two years in the Senate and then two years campaigning, please check your facts.

I’d love to see the “facts” about Obama, but he has all of his records sealed. Doesn’t that seem strange to you? We’re told he’s brilliant, but we can’t see any of the records? I have to sign a release allowing a potential employer to review my educational records when I apply for a job. For that matter, my kid would have to do the same if they apply to flip burgers. Obama, however hasn’t had to show anything to anyone. We may have just elected our first affirmative action President — based upon empty promises.

I see change coming, but it gives me little hope.

If a “freedom fighter” is what you are, then why would you not be in support of those who pay way more than their “fair” share in taxes protecting thier own private property? Or does your name imply what you do,i.e.- fight freedom?

  25. tryreading says:

Well, freedomfighter, I have no idea why you think you are fighting for freedom.

But I did have a couple of questions regarding your rather simple minded post.

    1. You believe the article is a lie, but you do not say why. I am assuming it is because you are so brainwashed by the HuffingtonPost that you think everything that is not radical or liberal must be a lie or it would cause the bulk of your braincells to activate, waking you out of your zombie state.

    2. You say there are no facts in the article, but there are clear references to real estate records and another showing that Henrietta sold property at a significant profit in 2005. Do you believe the counties that keep the real estate records manufactured them for this article to be written just so your sainted Obama could look bad?

    3. You say it is laughable that they say it is true, but they proved it was true. All you have proven as near as I can tell from your post is that it is easy to see why someone with your IQ would have blindly voted for Obama.

Sigh, when you see people like this that likely have a right to vote and yet are so illiberate (illiterate liberal) one has to wonder about our nation’s future. There should be some basic test to eliminate people like “freedomfighter” from the polls.

  30. tryreading says:

    Hi SRD,

I read over your very wordy comments and they didn’t really make much sense. So I was hoping you could elaborate for me. Here are the points on which you lost me.

    1. You asked a question regarding the articles statement that the woman is a real estate investor. I do not see any claim in the article that real estate investors in and of themselves are exempt from being homeless. What I do see is that she and her son still own real estate, where they could live or that they could sell. So I don’t see your point in asking that question.

    2. You say that someone that won millions and becomes a problem child by squandering their wealth should become a ward of the state rather than being forced to get a job? Do I get you there?

    3. You think that you are so much smarter than other people, because everyone but you thinks the homeless are lazy, etc. Seems like a pompous, condescending attitude for an illiberate (illiterate liberal). The article never makes any such statement and isn’t talking about a homeless person, the article is talking about Henrietta who is not homeless. The article just indicates she is not homeless by the simple premise that she owns a home. In addition, the state agency that provides aid offered her free rent and job training for both she and her son and they turned down. The only reason that seems evident is she and her son don’t want to work.

The rest of your comments are so inane, it just seems worthless to continue conversing with you unless you can answer these basic issues with your thought process.

  31. SRD says:

I have to say this as well. Do you really think that President Obama, this Harvard Graduate at the top of his class….this man that was a professor at a prestigious college, this man that wrote two best seller books, this man that was a community organizer, this man that was an Illinois Senator for eight years, this man that went to Congress and ultimately won the highest office in the land…is dumb enough to stage this? 32. SRD says:

This article claims that this “homeless” woman was really a real estate investor. Is the author of this article claiming that a person particular career category exempt them from being homeless? Well, let me educate this author to note that brilliant military veterans…can be homeless. That college educated men and women can also be homeless. That someone that won millions of dollars in a lottery can also become homeless. The myth about homelessness is that a person is uneducated, lazy or some other chosen selected description to make sure average Jane or Joe do not realize how they too can become a candidate for homelessness. The question is not what kind of work this woman use to do or is capable of doing….if the economy is so bad that work is drying up….a news reporter paper can go out of business and if the trend continues…YOU could be homeless and it would not be a scam but just a reality of the times. Stop spinning this story as if it is a scam. She was homeless and helped …and everyone knows that it was another coucil person that allowed her to live in their home. So, how can this be construed that Obama orchestrated this? The events of the story is known for those who do more than diet on sound bites…try it sometimes.

  33. angrymoderate says:

Have you seen the latest?? Some governors, even Democrats, are turning down funds from the Obama stimulus or considering it. Reason? It is a way to force the states to increase programs for the chronically unemployed and could end up costing the states millions.

The stimulus bill gives the states a small amount of money for extending unemployment benefits, but includes provisions that place a very expensive burden on the states to expand their unemployment programs if they accept the money from the stimulus. The states say they will have to raise taxes to meet the provisions after the first year or two.

Essentially, the “stimulus” package uses a bribe. To get the money now to help the unemployed, the states are forced to expand their programs to include more people that don’t need the help but will gladly take it, and it then forces the states to raise taxes on their citizens later when the stimulus runs out.

Clever, it is all so Obama gets the state to pay for his liberal help for the not-so-needy. And when the money runs out, he doesn’t look bad, the state does when it is forced to raise taxes.

  34. Seven says:

Yes, The American people are going to sit back and take it… just like they’ve “BEEN” doing all these years. The American people didn’t stand up when the government and business manipulated them out of a decent pension system, into 401k’s. In “all” the years the Dems and Repubs have been in power. The American people have never stood up and insisted on decent health care. When jobs started pouring out of America, the American people did not stand up and insist that be stopped.

The American people have been taking it, and taking it, and taking it like the good little submissives they’ve been turned into. Now… They’re getting the rest of the whipping they have coming to them.

The American people. What a pitiful joke. They laughed at us who tried to warn them. Called us nuts. Conspiracy freaks.

Take what you’ve got coming to you “American People.” Eat it like you’ve swallowed deep the rest of it you’ve been fed all these years and took it.

False. He WAS a plumber. He did not need an apprentice license. He didnt need a license period. You red state welfare scum have been sucking at the teet of the blue states for far too long.

Gee Mike, I had a couple of issues with your post, and I hope you don’t mind if I ask a few questions.

    1. Your referenced article doesn’t back up what you say at all. Could you please extrapolate on what states you are talking about and how you came to that conclusion from the referenced article?

    2. You seem to think that because needy people live in states whose constituents voted Republican, they should be starved so Democrats can eat? Do you suggest we used the saved funds to buy Obama Wagyu beef for his next party?

    3. You are saying that Democrats are more deserving of aid, and children that are hungry should stay hungry in states that voted Republican? Pretty harsh dude.

    4. You think the Democratic states are carrying the Republican states financially? Last I checked it was California that was the biggest drag in the uniion and it is verified by your data. They have accumulated a massive debt and are in major financial trouble. Should we starve them too?

    5. You do realize you can’t really compare that statistic on a state by state basis due to massive population differences and demographics, right. You can’t believe that life is all that simplistic, and you do realize that you are already contradicted by your own reference.

So, let’s see, what was your argument again?

    Hi Tom…

I wanted to respond, because I really thought you made a very fun post.

    1. I take it that your comment about knowing people that take advantage of the system is rhetorical. If not and it is directed at others of us on the board…yes, I know a list of people on government programs and aid that should not be. You do too, and you may be one of them so you are bitter.

    2. You say the article is fiction, but the real estate records are there for you to read yourself. Do you believe the counties where the real estate records were filed falsified them just so this article could be written about Obama’s Academy Award winning act?

    3. A phrase like ‘intellectually dishonest” brings your intellect into question. Do you even know what you mean, cuz no one else does. Is it intellectual? Is it dishonest? If dishonest, how is it dishonest?

I mean, let’s think about it, would it make any sense at all for her to REFUSE free housing unless there were some other strings attached? And that Obama, of course, planned this all out and had her ready to refuse any aid so that he would come off looking better? The whole premise of this article makes no sense. At all. As someone already mentioned, there are plenty of homeless people in the US and there is no way Obama would need to plant anyone in the audience just to look good.

This really is a sad attempt to make some news out of nothing and to defame our current President. He’s barely been in there for a month, at least give him a chance before you decide you completely dislike him.

  50. Laserbeam says:

@Woody – With all due respect, and I mean that quite sincerely, unemployment insurance does not provide enough money to make ends meet. For that reason it encourages people to seek work. Unfortunately, in this economy work is not always readily available.

I have been unemployed twice in the last seven years and it was excruciating. I don’t know about the laws in other states, but here in Washington State you have to jump through a whole lot of hoops on a daily basis in order to qualify for the assistance. I was audited three times in two weeks, which meant I had to bring in all of my job search logs for them to examine. They wanted to make sure I was applying for several jobs a week, never duplicates, and that I as applying for the type of work I am qualified for.

I am a single mother who hasn’t seen any child support in about ten years now. When I received unemployment insurance the last time, they said I made about $24 a week too much to qualify for food stamps. I was expected to support my family on a mere $1200 a month – and the rent alone was $1000. We had to go to food banks to survive it, something I never thought I’d have to do. It was frankly humiliating but I did it for my daughter’s sake.

I was desperate to go back to work. I applied for as many as fifty jobs a week until I was hired back at the public hospital/unviersity I used to work for. I am very grateful to be working.
